Assessment services we provide

Independent Medical Examination (IME)

Objective clinical assessment of injury, diagnosis, and current status. Includes review of treatment history, recovery progression, and consideration of capacity and return-to-work status, with clear and well-reasoned clinical opinions.

Permanent Impairment Assessment (PI)

Assessment conducted in accordance with the applicable WorkCover WA Guidelines. Includes whole person impairment (WPI) evaluation where required, with detailed explanation of findings, methodology, and reporting aligned with current regulatory requirements.

Medico-legal questions

What is an Independent Medical Examination (IME)?

An IME is an independent clinical assessment arranged for a third party — commonly an insurer, self-insurer, or legal practitioner — to answer specific questions about diagnosis, causation, treatment, capacity, prognosis, or impairment. The examiner does not take over treating care. A structured report responds to the referrer’s questions using examination findings and the supplied file.

Who can request an IME or PI assessment?

We accept requests from insurers, self-insured employers, law firms, case managers, government agencies, and other authorised parties. Workers usually attend because a referrer has arranged the assessment. Use the request form on this page to start.

Who pays for an IME in Western Australia?

In Western Australia, IMEs for workers’ compensation matters are typically organised and paid for by the insurer (or equivalent claim manager), though arrangements can vary by matter type. The requesting party should confirm funding when booking. Non-attendance fees may apply under the referrer’s booking terms — ask at the time of scheduling.

What should the worker bring, and can they bring a support person?

Workers should bring photo ID and any documents the referrer asked them to bring. A support person may be appropriate in many examinations; advise us in advance if an interpreter or support person will attend so we can confirm arrangements. Employer or insurer representatives are not part of the clinical examination.

How long do reports take?

Standard reports are typically delivered in 10–14 business days. Urgent reports may be available in approximately 3–5 business days by arrangement. Court or tribunal formatting can be prepared to submission requirements when specified at referral.

How is independence maintained?

Assessments are conducted by registered medical practitioners with appropriate IME qualifications, following WorkCover WA guidance and professional codes. Opinions are based on clinical reasoning, examination, and records — not on a preferred claim result. Where treating and independent roles could conflict, we keep pathways separate and transparent.
